There’s nothing like picking out thirty characters for a book tag challenge that makes you realize just how easily you forget the names of characters when it’s been years since you’ve read the book. I think it’s safe to say that I am embarrassed. 😣
So, it took me a bit of tracking down to find the original creator of this particular book tag, but fortunately I managed it eventually. And it turned out this book tag came from a booktuber IsThatChami, so definitely go check out her video if you’ve got the chance! I found the tag via Book Princess Reviews.
The rules are pretty simple, just write down the names of thirty book characters on pieces of paper, pick two for each question, and pick the best one for the job. Thus the characters not chosen are simply “not good enough.”
And now I’ve placed all thirty characters together in a jar and we’re ready to go!
YOU ONLY HAVE ONE MORE SPOT ON YOUR SPELLING BEE TEAM; WHO DO YOU PICK TO COMPLETE YOUR TEAM?
Jacin Clay (The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
Finn Abbot (All Our Yesterdays, Cristin Terrill)
I have to admit, I have no idea who would fit this question better. Frankly, I wouldn’t be all that interested in a spelling bee in the first place…but. Part of me wants to lean toward Jacin being a better speller than Finn, but I don’t know if that’s actually true. Plus, he’s such a grouch most of the time, I wouldn’t put it past Jacin simply sat up on the stage with his arms crossed and a bored expression, refusing to spell any words at all. And I think it’s that image that ultimately makes me want to pick Finn. His character was portrayed as decently smart, after all, and at least he’d have a blast on the team. 😋
BOTH CHARACTERS WANT TO KILL YOU. WHICH ONE WOULD YOU KILL FIRST SO YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF SURVIVING?
(The Wendy, Erin Michelle Sky and Steven Brown)
Oh my goodness, break my heart why don’t you? I don’t want to kill either of them, they’re such wonderful and amazing characters!! 😭 Gonna see if I can channel some Captain James Hook here to make my decision. 🤔 Okay, realistically, Wendy would have to be the one to die. She’s the most capable and frankly I wouldn’t want to go up against her. That said, I think ironically enough Hook would’ve killed John first cause he’s a self-riteous buttface whose opinion of women is dismal. Though, hopefully I could maybe reason with both John and Wendy and we could all walk away happy and alive (and kick Hook’s narcissistic arse). 😊
YOU’RE ON THE BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE AND YOU’RE DOWN TO THESE TWO CHARACTERS. WHICH ONE ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE YOUR ROSE TO?
[I’m jumping in to leave an aside and silently cross my fingers for very specific characters.]
Peter Pan (The Wendy, Erin Michelle Sky and Steven Brown)
Prince Kai (The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
Hahaha, well not the character I wanted…but one of them is from the same series, so I guess there’s some ironic luck there. Ah, this one is hard. I have a very strong emotional leaning toward Peter, but I’m also well aware of Peter’s nature and I just don’t think Peter and I would work well together, no matter how much I adore him. But I don’t want to take Kai away from Cinder, either. I ship them too much. Which ultimately leaves me at an awful stalemate here because I haven’t the slightest clue who I’d give my rose to. Can I go on another date with them both before I decide?
YOU’VE BEEN CHOSEN FOR THE HUNGER GAMES, WHO WOULD MOST LIKELY VOLUNTEER IN YOUR PLACE?
Michael Bennett (The Wendy, Erin Michelle Sky and Steven Brown)
Nicholas Carter (Passenger, Alexandra Bracken)
OUCH. Okay, gonna say hands down I think it would be Nicholas who volunteers. He’s just sort of got that fire to protect in him and I don’t think Michael is particularly good at that? Granted, I bet Michael would damn well volunteer, too, but the feeling just isn’t as strong with him. Especially since Michael is sort of portrayed as someone who needs protecting just as much as he tries to protect others. Either way, this breaks my heart.
YOU’RE STRANDED ON AN ISLAND. WHICH CHARACTER WOULD YOU SACRIFICE TO ENGAGE IN CANNIBALISM?
Charlie (The Wendy, Erin Michelle Sky and Steven Brown)
Etta Spencer (Passenger, Alexandra Bracken)
I oppose this question immediately just on account of the fact that there is no way I would ever resort to cannibalism. I’d rather starve. That said, I’m gonna rework this question to who is the weak link who will die. In this case…I’m really not sure? I’m inclined to say Etta, but she’s proven herself so much throughout her book series that I don’t know if that’s a fair answer. Charlie wasn’t even a super prominent character in The Wendy so I don’t know a lot about him, exactly. BUT, he is first mate on Captain Hook’s ship, so I’d say that alone means he’ll probably survive the island. Can’t be a first mate and not know how to get off an island, after all!
YOU’RE THE NEXT DC/MARVEL SUPERHERO (WITH YOUR OWN SHOW OF COURSE). WHO IS YOUR SIDEKICK?
Kestrel (The Winner’s Trilogy, Marie Rutkoski)
Deryn Sharp (Leviathan, Scott Westerfield)
Oh my goodness! This could not be a more perfect pair, to tell you the truth. What if Kestrel was the superhero instead of me? And Deryn was her sidekick? Cause I could totally see that! I think if I truly had to pick for this one, I’d say Deryn Sharp would be my sidekick just because I don’t really see Kestrel as a sidekick at all? Plus, Deryn is fairly young and still learning and making her mark as a shipman, so I think she fits the bill really well until she goes on to be her own superhero. I love them both dearly though.
YOU’RE A MANAGER OF AN AVOCADO ADMIRING COMPANY, WHO WOULD YOU FIRE FOR LACK OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS?
Winter Hayle-Blackburn (The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
Mia Corvere (Nevernight, Jay Kristoff)
Well, what a weird company. Who better to work there than Winter? She could totally pull off great communication about the beauty of avacodos to customers! I can’t think of anyone who would manage this task more perfectly. Mia simply couldn’t. I mean, she’s an assassin, for goodness sake. Her communication skills…well, lets just say they certainly don’t add up here.
YOU’VE JUST FINISHED A BOOK IN WHICH YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER DIES. WICH CHARACTER IS MOST LIKELY TO COMFORT YOU?
Marina (All Our Yesterdays, Cristin Terrill)
Prince Aleksander (Leviathan, Scott Westerfield)
Ahhh, I think they’re both likely to try and comfort me. I’m not sure who would do a better job of it, though. I think, perhaps, Marina would be better at it in the end mainly because she just doesn’t have as young an air as Alex does. Marina had to grow up a lot after all the things she faced and it just seems like something she’d be more capable of. Especially considering what she ends up losing.
UGH, IT’S HIGH SCHOOL. WHO WOULD MOST LIKELY BE PART OF THE POPULAR CLIQUE?
James Hook (The Wendy, Erin Michelle Sky and Steven Brown)
Alphonse Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist [Manga], Hiromu Arakawa)
Hahaha! Definitely not Alphonse. I think this one is pretty clear right off the bat. Hook is popular. He’s also a giant arse. Plain and simple. Al is the sweetheart kid who always knows how to comfort everyone. He’s also probably the one who stands up to Hook for being a bully, lbr.
THE DAY HAS ARRIVED; YOU’RE FINALLY A YEAR OLDER! WHO WOULD HAVE THE NERVE TO FORGET YOUR BIRTHDAY?
Wolf [Za’ev Kesley]
(The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
This one would be Wolf! He’s probably too focused on Scarlet to remember anyone else’s birthday. Iko’s got the ability to have instant computer reminders (not that she’d need it!) and would never forget anyone’s birthday She’d be so into it that there would be an insanely extravagant party all ready and set up WEEKS in advance.
YOU’VE JUST FOUND AN UPCOMING BOOKTUBE STAR. WHO WOULD IT MOST LIKELY BE?
Linh Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist [Manga], Hiromu Arakawa)
Lmao, neither of them. I know that might seem like a cop out answer, but I just don’t see either of these characters ever making videos to talk about books or anything that they like, really. Cinder would feel far too uncomfortable and I just don’t see Edward as capable of focusing on such a task long enough to bother? It’s a nice idea, sure, but no. Just no.
SLEEPOVER TIME! UNFORTUNATELY YOU CAN ONLY INVITE ONE PERSON. WHO WOULD YOU INVITE?
Tric (Nevernight, Jay Kristoff)
Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
Uhm, well, I don’t think I’d love this sleepover but I’d definitely invite Scarlet over Tric. I just feel like I have more in common with her than I do with him and ultimately that will make for being able to chat more comfortably.
BAM, YOU’RE PREGNANT. WHO’S THE FATHER/MOTHER?
Cress Darnell (The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
Winry Rockbell (Fullmetal Alchemist [Manga], Hiromu Arakawa)
Realistically, neither of these would be possible. And I’m honestly having a hard time deciding between them, mainly because I don’t see either as the mother type just yet? I know Winry eventually has kids with Edward which is beautiful and great, but that’s more as an epilogue than anything and besides…they’re both so young! So I dunno. If I had to choose, I think I lean more toward Winry than Cress.
YOU’VE JUST WRITTEN A SUPER IMPORTANT TEXT. WHO WOULD ‘SEE’ IT BUT NOT REPLY?
Sam Temple (Gone, Michael Grant)
Arin (The Winner’s Trilogy, Marie Rutkoski)
Ah, so for this one I think it really depends on the moment for each of the characters. I think they’re both pretty capable of it, but my instinct says that Arin would be the most likely. I mean, he was in the middle of some very important stuff and while I could easily say the same for Sam, there were some lulls for him and he’s just more likely to use a phone than Arin anyway.
YOU’VE JUST WOKEN UP AND IT’S TIME FOR BREAKFAST. YOUR MUM’S BEEN REPLACE BY WHO?
Carswell Thorne (The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer)
Astrid Ellison (Gone, Michael Grant)
Of course I don’t pick my favorite character of all time until the LAST question and it’s not even one that he’ll fit with. I’m definitely going to say that I’d rather wake up to see Astrid as my mum over Thorne. It would just be way too weird to wake up with my #1 character crush in that role. So I’m just gonna say no on that and go with the really smart girl. She’d make a good mom when she got older, I think.
So there you have it! Thirty characters, fifteen questions. (Part of me feels like I didn’t mix them enough, lol.) Join in the fun yourself! Feel free to tag me if you do!
