the becoming of noah shawI don’t know quite what it is, but I’ve always loved the covers that Michelle Hodkin has gotten for her books over the years. From Mara Dyer to Noah Shaw, they all have this incredibly captivating and dark quality to them that makes it difficult for you to look away. It just sort of draws you in, building this desire in your mind to understand what is going on within the confines of the story. And I’ve always loved covers that make you want to read the book. For The Becoming of Noah Shaw, you’ll see a lot of that. This presents itself in contrasting colors, an incredible incorporation of shadows, and even within the eeriness of the title and what it could be compared with. After all, you begin with The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and turn, eventually, to The Becoming of Noah Shaw and if that doesn’t give you some shivers, well…

The funny thing about these book covers is that they’re not what I would usually consider “my type.” I’m sure it’s not surprising that I typically lean toward liking brighter looking covers, whether the cover manages to be foreboding or not. I recall there was a cover featured a short time ago that was bright whites and blue, but foreshadowed the coming of a war. To date, I’m fairly certain I’ve only featured a small number of darker covers. I really am left wondering what is going on in the cover for The Becoming of Noah Shaw. It looks like the characters are caught within a fire, with sparks flying around them. The text of the title is presented in a rather gray color, which reminds me of ash. There’s a sort of wind implication, with the way the fire embers seem to be floating around as well as the positioning of the girl’s hair. And it all comes together exceptionally well. Even Michelle Hodkin’s name drives home these themes.

How do you feel about this cover? What are your favorite pieces? Which pieces would you change? Does it make you want to read the book? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Happy reading, everyone!
