Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

Honestly, this Top Ten Tuesday is going to be a rather short one for me and that’s largely due to the fact that I’m shite with titles. Therefore, I don’t really have many that I would give a different title to. I have even less that I would even know what to call it. After spending more than an hour looking through all the books I have, I was only able to come up with three. And, frankly, that’s more than I thought I’d have. So, without further ado…here are the three books that I would retitle if given the chance.

brisingr3. Brisngr by Christopher Paolini

Honestly, I spent an inordinant amount of time during my childhood years speculating what the third and what was supposed to be the final book in the Inheritance “trilogy” would be. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, believed it would be called Empire. Years later and I’m in high school when I find out that the final book is being split into two. And suddenly appears Brisingr, utterly breaking the E pattern Paolini had so beautifully set up. I’ve been bitter about it ever since.

If I were to retitle it…well, I couldn’t say for sure what would work best. But maybe Ember? Going along with that fire theme, you know?

inheritance2. Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

And the final book of the series is on here for the same reasons as the third. Why did he ditch the E pattern? It could have been Empire as was speculated. It could have been Expire. I don’t know. Anything to continue that pattern. I felt so strongly about it then and I still kind of do.

rape jokes1. Rape Jokes by Louise MacGregor

Honestly…anything. I would change this title to anything else. For a book that was so good and was such a wonderful commentary on sexual assault, rape, and the trauma that women go through afterward, I can’t believe that the author went with such a disgusting and despicable title. It was my only complaint about the whole novel.

  1. The last one is…A Choice, that’s for sure. Unclear how that’s supposed to work marketing-wise. Surely no one who’s like, “Finally, my kind of material!” would buy it after seeing what it was about, and surely a lot of people who WOULD want that kind of book are either not going to touch it at all, or refuse to buy it on principle.

  2. I’m still pissed that Paolini broke the third book into two books! It had so many long boring travel parts that could have been cut out. It totally could have been one book! And yea, Rape Jokes is an AWFUL title
