These are some of the coolest things I’ve ever seen and I’m so excited for them to become more prominent here. Flipback books originated, I believe, in the Netherlands and have been increasing in popularity for a long time. And no wonder, really, because they’re incredibly convenient. For now, it looks like the John Green box set–or each of the four John Green books individually–appear to be the only ones truly available here in the U.S. (unless you want to buy an expensive one on e-bay) but I imagine that will change in the future.
A little bit thicker, but definitely about the size of a phone, the most amazing thing about these books is that they can fit in your pocket! Granted, some pockets (primarily women’s) might be too small, but generally I can carry these books around in my back pockets with no problem. The book is held a little differently than typical books, sideways rather than in both hands. I think the general idea is that you should be able to turn the pages with your thumb, but I have to admit that the process is a little bit difficult. Even so, it’s definitely possible to hold it with one hand and read, thoroughly ideal for those of us who are masters at the walking and reading thing.
I’ve only started reading a little bit, but I can tell you I’m kind of in love with this format. I wouldn’t want all my books like this, but maybe just my favorites so that I can carry them around in my back pocket half the time. So, keep an eye out for these books. The better they do here, the more likely it is that we’ll have the option of buying other books in this format and I’d really love to have The Lunar Chronicles like this!
What do you think of the flipback books? Have you gotten your hands on any yet? Are you interested? Do you think they’ll do well? Let me know in the comments!
