I went home recently and it was amazing. I think it ultimately depends on your personal view of the matter, but in my case not all of us are lucky enough to get a chance to return to our childhood homes. Now, I’m 25 years old and I grew up in California. I loved it here so much, in fact, that even though I ended up spending 2007-2017 in the state of Maine I still consider myself from California.
Back in 2005, my parents entered into some financial troubles and we had to sell our house. This house meant a lot to me due to the fact that my father and his family built it. I moved out of this house when I was twelve years old and I have not been back since until a few days ago.
I’ve been fortunate enough that my journey eventually lead me out of the cold hell that is the state of Maine and back to the wonderfully warm state I’ve called my home for pretty much my entire life. Luckier still, my boyfriend decided to make the trip back to the place I grew up with me over the weekend. I got to see several places that I haven’t been to in years and best of all, I got to see my old house.
The new owners, the fourth to live in that house, have sadly put it up for sale. This is primarily due to its secluded location, which wouldn’t be a problem were it not for the fact that the people living there are an old couple and need to be near a good hospital. And it was for this reason alone, the fact that the were selling, that we made the decision to knock and ask if we could have a look around. I admit, this sounds awkward as all hell, and personally I felt incredibly awkward knocking on the door. But I have to say, it was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.
Not only is the man who lives there now a wonderful human being in general, he was kind enough to let me revisit the home I grew up in. A few things have changed since I lived there, but much of it is just as I remembered. And I got so emotional. I got to get to know one of the people who has been living in the house my father built for us and I was even able to answer a few of his questions about the house in return. I don’t think we’re all ever able to return to our childhoods, but for that short period of time, I was lucky enough to manage it.
And it meant so much to me.
At the end of the day, I think the thing to walk away with here is that there are some amazing and wonderful people in this world and I will never forget meeting one of them.
