If you’re ever looking for incredibly cute bedtime stories, look no further than Help Wanted: Must Love Books by Janet Johnson. Not only does this book just speak to me on a deeply personal level, it is all kinds of wonderful, sweet, and adorable. Young Shailey, perhaps unlike most kids, absolutely loves bedtime. Why? Well, because she has the best storyteller dad in the world to curl up with her and read the most amazing books, complete with spectacular voices and everything! But when her dad gets a new job, suddenly it begins interfering with bedtime so much that Shailey has no choice but to fire him. And thus begins the search for someone new to fill the job.
As Shailey posts a job listing and begins to interview a number of different potential bedtime story-readers, it quickly becomes clear that the search is going to be harder than it seems. She cycles through a number of well-known fairy tale characters who apply for the job, very nearly offering it to Sleeping Beauty until she falls asleep right in the middle of the story. The book cleverly offers brilliant reasons for why each applicant is unqualified, leaving Shailey feeling rather dejected after she’s gone through quite a few prospects.
And then Robin Hood arrives.
I loved, loved, loved this book. It weaved fairy tales with reality in such a wonderfully honest and exciting way, quickly bringing a smile to my face with each turn of the page. It’s a simple story, but it also brings up a situation that many kids might find themselves dealing with. The resolution was perfect, even bringing up a potential solution for a child who might be in this situation. And it was just one of the cutest stories I’ve ever come across for kids.
As a girl who loved books immensely as a child, I don’t think it’s really much of a surprise that this is one I would love to read to my future child and will definitely be on my shelf at some point in the future.
I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
