A Curse so Dark and Lonley by Brigid Kemmerer is a Beauty and the Beast retelling where the Belle character is a young woman with cerebral palsy who’s family is struggling to survive and the Beast is a prince forever repeating the autumn of his 18th year alive until he can convince someone to fall in love with him, turning into a beast at the end of the fall each time and destroying everything and everyone around him. And it’s definitely going onto my TBR. I have a special place in my heart for retellings and while I’ve definitely seen Beauty and the Beast a number of times, I can’t help but feel drawn to each and every one, wondering how I can compare each book to the ones that have preceded it.
I’m not sure which twists actually come along with A Curse so Dark and Lonely, but I can say I’m really excited to find out what they are. There seem to be some darker forces at play threatening the safety of all the characters in the novel, something much more sinister than in the original. The thorny brambles on the cover definitely give you that sort of feeling, and for me even bring to mind the mistress of all evil.
So what do you think of this book? Is it one you’ll be interested in reading? Are you a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast retellings like I am? Is it one too many retellings for you? Let me know in the comments!
