Nick and June Were Here by Shalanda Stanely is definitely a unique book, but I don’t know if I’m going to be reading it. It just sounds like all kinds of bad decisions and disasters that I just don’t know if I can stomach my way through. Honestly, it reminds me a little bit of that strange British show The End of the Fucking World and that was honestly rough to get through at points. I would hope that this book has a better message, results in the bad decisions changing to good ones but something about it just makes me feel as though it wont. They’ll get off by some lucky circumstance or they’ll escape into the abyss where no one in the world can find or separate them and I just don’t think this is the kind of story for me.
The two main characters of this story are about to be separated as a result of their life circumstances, her schizophrenia diagnosis that is threatening to land her in the hospital and his grand theft auto habits to support his aunt threatening to have him arrested. So, naturally, their only possible choice if they want to remain together is to run off with one another. Nick and June is all about the escapism. And it seems to me as though it’s going to be hurting June quite a bit.
What are your thoughts about this book? Do you think you’ll pick it up? Pass on reading it? Let me know in the comments!
