on the come upNow, I’ll be honest here: I hate rap music. The closest I’ve ever come to actually enjoying rap music is that really poppy boy band rap that’s honestly not really rap at all. So…reading a book like On the Come Up by Angie Thomas that’s partially about rap doesn’t initially sound like something I would want to spend my day doing. But this book is about so much more than rap music, even if the main character’s dream is to become a brilliant rap artist. This book is about the struggles of poverty, of potential homelessness, of job loss and family and the ways in which we deal with these incredibly difficult stresses in life. And when it comes down to a moment in which you’re old enough to understand the struggles your parent(s) are making to keep the family surviving, it’s easy to see where you need to step up and help.

For Bri, when her mother loses her job, becoming a successful rap musician is no longer just a dream but a necessity in order to help provide for her struggling family. This book touches on a great deal of issues that surround the misfortune of having lost one’s job while needing to survive and protect one’s family and the ways in which poverty affect those in our society. Were those extra themes not there, I likely wouldn’t be as interested in reading this book.

A large part of the reason why this book ended up on my TBR has to do with the author and her prior books. I’m expecting a lot to come from this one and hopefully she delivers. Novels that touch base on real and important issues that we face in the world today are always worth picking up and spending some time on.

What are your thoughts on this book? Are you excited for it? Are you not as interested? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Read this a few weeks ago and loved it! I totally agree – you don’t need to be a fan of rap to enjoy this book. It’s about so much more than that. I love Angie Thomas, I can’t wait for her to write another book.
