I’ve sworn off A. G. Howard novels. And it’s really such a shame because she has some of the best covers for novels I’ve ever seen. But I’ve noticed too much toxicity in her books to continue reading them. What’s even crummier is that Stain has a really intriguing synopsis and genuinely sounds like something I’d enjoy. I have a feeling, though, knowing Howard and knowing my disdain for literally every book of hers that I’ve read–skies, this makes me so damn sad–I have a feeling I would end up having very similar problems with this book that I did with her others. And of course it comes down to the fact that a lot of her male characters show abusive tendencies.
Cause I can get past static characters and frustrating tropes for the most part. But I can’t get over how she misinterpreted and destroyed all potential for her Phantom of the Opera retelling. I can’t quite get past how controlling her male characters were in her Alice in Wonderland retelling. And while I would love to love her stories, I find them so problematic each time I read them that I just know I would regret reading this one.
And yet, I find myself tempted based on the summary and cover. I’ll give Howard this much, whoever publicizes her books is brilliant. Anyway, this book wont be on my TBR unless I cave. And if I do cave, I have very low expectations.
How about you? Is Stain on your TBR? Is it not? Have you noticed the same issues with Howard that I have/ Let me know in the comments!
