I’ll be honest, I am instantly turned off of The Beauty of the Moment by Tanaz Bhathena just based on the cover. I don’t know what it is about the blank white background and black and white flowers in the corner that I dislike so much, but it just doesn’t speak to me. Ironically, I love the girl in the middle and the text placement–which, if you read my cover love posts, you’ll know that text placement is one of my biggest complaints about most–but the flowers just ruin it for me. And, even more unfortunate is that the synopsis didn’t really endear me much to the novel either. I do tend to shy away from books that are solely focused on a couple getting together and falling in love. Yes, I like a good love story but I don’t ever want that to be the only piece to the novel. And while I do have my guilty pleasures–hello, I hate you but then grow to love you trope–I usually end up regretting reading books like this. So, honestly, I’m really leaning toward not adding this book to my TBR since I don’t think I’m the best audience for it.
The synopsis spends most of its time describing the struggles of the main characters in relation to their parents and their personalities. Driven and motivated Susan with the nearly divorced parents and misbehaving bad boy Malcolm with a mom lost to cancer and an adulterous dad…honestly, that mix there confuses and upsets me deeply. Is it trying to say that his father cheated on his mother while she had cancer before she died or is he cheating on a new wife? Either way, I’m cringing hardcore. And so, really, I don’t care about how these two characters meet and fall in love. I just don’t. I’ll admit, the mention of culture and the fact that I’m pretty sure the main character is not a white girl makes me a little more interested, but I don’t know if it’s enough for me to pick up the book.
So, this is where I turn to you. If you’ve read this book and it is truly amazing, please take a moment to let me know because otherwise, I don’t see myself reading this one. What are your thoughts on this book? Do you like it? Will you add it to your TBR or no? Let me know in the comments! Happy reading, everyone!
