watch us riseI’m actually pretty on the fence about Watch Us Riseby Renée Watson and Ellen Hagan, not because I have any belief that the book will be bad or because I don’t believe in the message–in fact, I’m rather in love with and fond of the message–but rather because the plot just sounds kind of…dull to me. This is the sort of story that I would appreciate from real women, and do appreciate, and the sort of story that I’d want to read in a news or journal article rather than an entire novel. So, as amazing and important as the message is, I just really don’t think turning it into a 400 page book is going to really keep my attention. Of course, I’ve never been exceptionally fond of contemporary novels as I infinitely prefer fantasy and I know this is likely playing a large role in my reluctance to spend my time reading 400 pages about two girls posting online about a Women’s Rights Club.

Now, don’t get me wrong, having a Women’s Rights club is important and being able to discuss the intricacies regarding the wrongs that have been done to women for eons and are still being done today is important. And I love that there is a platform for that. I could not appreciate more that this novel exists. But I don’t care to read it because I am fairly certain that I am going to get very bored while doing so. And perhaps if this book were shorter, say 200 pages, I’d be more inclined to read it. But I’m just not feeling up to spending the required amount of time on this novel.

I truly do hope that this novel is amazing for others, that they feel empowered by the two women fighting to keep their club running when their principal insists that they must dissolve it. I hope that this novel gets important messages to people who need to hear them. And that’s all there is to it for me now. Maybe I’ll change my mind in the future, but as of this moment I think I’m going to pass on reading this one.

What are your thoughts on Watch Us Rise? Are you going to add it to your TBR? Will you pass it up? Should I change my mind and read it? Let me know what you think in the comments!
