we set the dark on fireI’ve actually been looking forward to We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia for a while now and I am so very glad to see that it’s out now. A story about the injustices between the rich and the poor, the privileged and those who struggle from the moment they are born, and the ways in which people address such issues, We Set the Dark on Fire sounds like such an exciting and provocative read. I simply cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. You see, the issues of the privileged who regularly ignore the issues of classism and, in fact, appreciate and enjoy it is a topic that I feel rather strongly about. Add in the fact that there’s a rebellion brewing in this novel and you’ve pretty much got me sold on the whole thing. Hopefully the issues will be addressed properly in a way that manages to portray the problems respectfully.

Set in a world where young Daniela Vargas’ parents had to sacrifice everything in order to get her a place within an academy that grooms young women to be housewives or mothers in order to live a comfortable, richly influenced life, this novel spins everything on its head when Daniela is asked to spy for a resistance group. I do think that there is quite a bit of potential for this book to be phenomenal, though there is also potential for it to fail. I’m hoping to see some great things from this book.

What do you think thus far of We Set the Dark on Fire? Is it a book you’d be interested in reading or one you think you’ll skip? Let me know your thoughts in the comments and happy reading!
